“Big Rufus,” a 16-foot bronze bobcat sculpture by artist Dan Medina, stands as a proud symbol of school spirit and community in University Plaza at UC Merced. Perched atop three cast-in-place concrete pillars with recessed lettering reflecting the university’s values, the monument is a striking focal point on campus. The surrounding architectural concrete work enhances the space with a circular sand-finished plaza, curved seating walls, and precision-cut joint lines, creating an inviting gathering area. Pathways seamlessly integrate the site into the campus, while recessed lighting highlights the sculpture at night, casting dramatic shadows. Now a permanent landmark, Big Rufus embodies pride, resilience, and unity, welcoming students, faculty, and visitors while serving as a hub for campus traditions and celebrations.
